Blood Brothers
by Willy Russell
Wednesday 25th April to
Saturday 28th April 2012
AS the man behind such iconic films and plays as "Shirley Valentine", "Educating Rita" and "John, Paul, George, Ringo and Bert" Willy Russell needs little introduction.
He originally wrote and presented "Blood Brothers" as a school play in 1981. It debuted as a musical in 1983 and the current West End revival of that musical has run from 1988 to the present day.
Set in Liverpool in post-war 1960s Britain, the play follows the journeys of twins “Eddie” and “Micky” as they grow up in contrasting worlds, having been separated at birth by their mother who could not afford to keep them both. Life forces her to give one of the twins away to her wealthy boss who is unable to bear her own children. Their different backgrounds take the brothers to opposite ends of the social spectrum, one becoming an Oxbridge-graduated councillor while the other is unemployed and spends some time in prison. Although they do come together as friends, their guardians ensure that they remain unaware of their familial relationship and
when they both fall in love with the same girl their friendship is stretched to the limit.
This play will be directed by Lesley Lofthouse, whose extremely successful work with the Society includes Steel Magnolias,
'Allo 'Allo and A Chorus of Disapproval.
